Craft Workshops Begin! By Maria Coyne

An aim of mine, for many years, has been to set up my own craft class... and here we are!
Focusing on surface design my classes will aid you in creating a broad range of products from cushion covers, fabric book sleeves, to cards etc.
Interested in working with both beginners and  experienced crafters I aim to make this work shop a collaborative, exciting experience for all.
Set up in four sections the classes are held fortnightly on Wednesdays that will take us from January to August and you will journey through the first half of the years seasonal colours!
Projects and faces change- you can drop by to just one class.
Long term projects work t the same time as I am hoping to create an exhibition in the local community.

Rules of Adornment

On the evening of Friday 29th, me and mum went to the event 'Rules of Adornment' at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Related to the Pearls exhibition, which explores the history of the natural pearl and their symbolism, currently on at the museum this event was to make us all question why we choose to wear what we do. Even though I make a lot of jewellery I have previously never thought of the role that my bracelets and necklaces have on a person accept for aesthetic value. So this enjoyable evening was quite thought provoking!

  • Why do we adorn ourselves with jewellery, accessories, technology and tattoos?
  • What is the role for adornment in popular culture?
  • Is it about status or personal expression?
  • What meanings are communicated and concealed through the language of body adornment across different cultural backgrounds.
Adornment= something that beautifies,  adorns or decorates; an ornament.

  • Skin Deep, Brothers of the Stripe
  • Marks of Social Identity, Sharon Hung
  • The Alternative Limb Project, Sophie de Oliveria Barata
  • Pearls, Myths, Symbolism and fashions, Dr. Najia
  • Beirut, I love you - In Conversation with Zena el Khalil

Moment of Fashion Fame; By Shona Coyne

Friday 20th September

I went to London Fashion Weekend for the first time!
It was quite an awesome day with lots of things to look at.  As soon as I arrived the day began with excitement as this quirky ice cream van was parking up. It was selling clothes but it turned out to be a beautifully sunny day so we could have had ice cream!

I started my visit by listening in on the 'Designing for Topshop' talk in the Vodafone lounge which was very interesting! I was standing with my notepad and pen taking notes- I am such a geek hehe.  ;)

There was many beautiful clothes but sadly I didn't buy any!
haha but I did buy a book though from the book shop- which was awesome. I spent a while in there with all the lovely fashion books.

For any jewellery addict this book grabbed my attention just like any glittery bangle or feathered chain!  Fashion Jewellery Catwalk and Couture By Maia Adams.
I was very close to buying a blue paint- splodge skirt which really caught my eye (should have bought it.) Also loved the epic handbags and shoes from KZENIYA LTD http://kzeniya.com/ which were very creative and eye catching; created by a the laser cuter! (Plus they have a really nice video on their website.)

My favourite highlight was when my hot pink cardigan, which my mum knitted back in the nineties, was mentioned by the presenter who was introducing the Trend Catwalk show at 1.30.
It was an awesome moment. haha I was on trend.

My outfit included:
  • Silver metallic skirt from Warehouse- eBay
  • Black walking boots- eBay
  • Black blouse- Primark
  • Cream laced socks
  • Hot pink knitted cardigan- Mums vintage knit collection (ie her wardrobe!)
Again I go somewhere and come back with lots of things to read! But it was awesome-especially for mums knitted cardigan (still in total amazement!!)  and I hope to go again, with Friends, in February!!

This funky, unique collection will most certainly keep you warm as the air gets colder and will be a perfect partner to keeping your super cosy if you dare to take a walk to the park..
